Laboratories

The Laboratories are the fundamental tool for creation and research at TeatroLAB Madrid. It is within them that the productions which later become part of the company’s repertoire are born and developed.

They are not independent courses or isolated workshops: they are part of the project’s own working system. In the laboratories, stage materials are explored, scenes are developed, and the foundations of each production are investigated before moving into the production process.

One of the central tools of this work is Composition, a collective creation process in which each performer is responsible for what they propose and build. It involves bringing together apparently unconnected elements in order to discover new stage meanings, move beyond the obvious, and generate singular creation from within the ensemble and from the artistic identity of those taking part.

Each laboratory also incorporates specific tools adapted to the needs of the project. In different processes, the company has explored resources such as the handling of invisible objects, bunraku, the tragic chorus, the dramatic use of objects, or the investigation of movement and voice within a specific genre. These lines of work have been part of projects such as Our Town (Nuestro Pueblo), Cuatro corazones con freno y marcha atrás, and Tragedia española.

The laboratories are open to actors, actresses, and performing arts artists who wish to engage actively in their own creative process and gain first-hand knowledge of how a company really works. In them, artists research, experiment, build scenes, and develop materials that may later become new TeatroLAB Madrid productions.
